British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
