The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
